8 Exciting Things To Do in Asturias on Rainy Days

We often find ourselves looking for interesting things to do in Asturias on rainy days. Probably because Asturias is a rainy region with high levels of precipitation, but that’s why it is so beautiful. Therefore, more often than we might expect, we need to change our plans and find what to do when it rains. Don’t worry, there are plenty of entertaining activities you can do all around Asturias while hiding from the rain.

Rainy day in Asturias

1. Visit the Aquarium in Gijón

If you want to be indoors but feel like you are surrounded by the Cantabric ocean, this is the perfect plan! The Gijón Aquarium offers a tour of 60 freshwater and saltwater tanks that allow you to learn about the flora and fauna of the seas in detail. It showcases 4,000 marine species including sharks, eels & anemones, and has touch pools.

2. Visit a Cider House

First, let’s talk about sidra. Sidra is an important part of the Asturian culture! Asturian people love drinking sidra on any occasion, whether it’s with food or just as a casual sit-down with something to snack. It is light, refreshing, and fairly cheap (normally less than 3 euros per bottle).
Sidra is an alcoholic beverage made from the fermented juice of apples. It is poured in very small quantities from a height into a wide glass and is done to get air bubbles into the drink. But don’t worry, you don’t need to pour it like that. The server at the bar/restaurant will pour your sidra in the glass whenever you request. Some restaurant have a device that pours sidra for you! BUT, you have to drink all the sidra in the glass in one time, no sipping.

Now that you are convinced that drinking sidra in Asturias is a must, you should add visiting a cider house to your list! That way, you can learn all about the cider-making process, see how it’s done and where it’s being stored, and most importantly – try fresh sidra!

There are 2 tours in SPANISH to a cider house:

Similarly, if you just want to learn about sidra, but don’t feel like visiting a cider house, you can also visit the Cider Museum (Museo de La Sidra) in Nava. The Cider Museum aims primarily to promote and bring attention to this typical Asturian drink.

3. Go Indoor Climbing

If you want to stay indoors but still do something active on a rainy day in Asturias, this is the perfect solution! All over Asturias you can find places with indoor climbing walls where you can spend the day climbing and in some even have lunch or grab a drink.

Here are some of the many options:

4. Visit a Cheese Producer

Did you know that in Asturias we have 50 different types of cheese? Yes, that’s a lot! This means that you will for sure find at least one type of cheese that you absolutely love! Visiting a cheese producer (queseria) is a great plan to spend a rainy day learning about the process and tasting yummy cheese.

Most types of cheese can actually be found in the east of Asturias, around the Picos de Europa and the Sueve and Cuera mountains. The most popular cheese in Asturias, and the one with most prizes, is Cabrales cheese. Cabrales is a blue cheese that matures in caves and the pride of Asturian people. Another popular cheese is Gamonéu, it has a smoky flavor that I haven’t seen in any other cheese.

So, now that you are convinced to spend a rainy day visiting a cheese producer, below are several options for tours done in ENGLISH:

And here are the same options but for tours in SPANISH:

5. Watch a Movie

It might be the most obvious activity in Asturias when it rains, but sometimes people forget about this one! Most of the theaters are located in a shopping mall, so you can also do some shopping before or after watching the movie. AND some of the newer theaters even have reclining chairs!! So add that one to your list – go to a movie theater on a rainy day in Asturias 🙂

6. Go Bowling and Play Video Games

This is by far one of my favorites! Gather your family or friends and head to the nearest bowling alley. It doesn’t matter how old you are, I promise you will have a good time. Pro tip: bring a pair of socks from home!
Above all, the best part is that most bowling alleys have a variety of video games so you can feel like a child again and rack up those colorful tickets that you can convert into a prize.

Did you know? most of bowling alleys and arcades are locate near a movie theater. If you combine bowling, arcade, and movie you have an unforgettable day full of activities that will make you forget about the bad weather.

7. Visit a Museum

Asturias has a huge variety of museums which are spread out all over the region. This is a great plan for a rainy day in any part of Asturias. You can find here museums about dinosaurs, cave art, modern art, and a lot more!

Here are some of my favorites but you can find so many other more options in the Asturias Tourism Site.

  • Jurassic Museum of Asturias (MUJA) / Museo del Jurásico de Asturias
  • Tito Bustillo Cave Art Centre / Centro de Arte Rupestre de Tito Bustillo
  • Fine Arts Museum of Asturias / Museo de las Bellas Artes de Asturias

Mining used to be one of the biggest industries in Asturias. Many Asturians have at least one family member who used to be a miner in previous generations.
If you want to experience part of this cultural and important aspect of Asturias, I highly recommend that you spend a day visiting on of the Asturian mines.

Below you can find some mines as well as mining museums worth a visit:
The Mining and Industry Museum (MUMI) / – Museo de la Minería y de la Industria de Asturias
