My absolute favorite hike in Asturias, Ruta del Cares, and I think it is a must-do for nature lovers who visit Asturias, so I hope you’ll enjoy it 🙂
The full route of the Ruta del Cares is from Poncebos to Posada de Valdeónconsists, but the most popular part is from Poncebos to Caín. This part is 12 KM one way, and 24 KM if you go and come back; about 3-4 hours each side (6-8 hours in total).
Important: if you are afraid of heights, this is NOT the route for you!
The whole route is between the tall rocky mountains of the natural park Picos de Europa. As I mentioned it is a 24 KM route which lasts 6-8 hours depending on your stops, so make sure you start your day early!
Expect to walk between mountain, trough the mountain (as in the picture above), and also in dark misty caves that pass inside the mountains. How can you not love it?
In some areas the trail is very small so pay extra attention! The route in general is not difficult but there are some ups and downs and since you’ll be walking so many hours expect to get tired!!
Once you finish the first part of the route you will arrive to Caín, there are a few restaurants there BUT some close off-season and in the season they can get very full. You can call ahead to make a reservation or bring your own food and eat by the beautiful river in the village.
My favorite part about the hike is that if there are not too many people, will find many mountain goats! They are not afraid to approach you and ask for food so you can come prepared with some snacks!
No better way to conclude the post than with a collage of mountain goats the mountain goats we encountered in the area 🙂
